The new version of WideMail, version 0.1.0 has now been released.
New Features:
- Code ported to native objective-c, smaller & faster.

See the “Read Me.txt” for installation instructions.
NOTE: To enable the new “WideMail Column” – Right click the message list table header and select “WideMail Column” from the list, hide any other columns you do not need, such as subject, sender, date etc.
NOTE: If you disable the subject column and then uninstall WideMail you will not be able to get the subject column back without reinstalling WideMail and re-enabling the subject column.

Hey, this looks really great!
One comment/complaint is that if you don’t have other columns on, the WideMail column doesn’t seem to color itself correctly (to display colors based on filters or the threading colors). A work around to this is to make sure that you have one column on each side of the widemail column that does color (so I put attachments on one side and size on the other). It would be good if it colored itself regardless of other columns surrounding.
But thanks, this is a lot cooler than the last double tall row thing, wonderful work!
What a great plug-in you have made! Compliments and a big thank you goes out to you!
All the best.
What a wonderful plugin! Thank you for all your hard work, dedication and time.
I do have one question, is it possible to place the sender of the email on top of
the subject?
Thanks again and keep up the great work!!

Hello Dane,
You´ve done a great work!
But: Bug or feature? If the WideMail column isn´t activated, the other columns always have 2 rows. Can you change these? Would be wonderful.
Best regards,
F.
Many thanks for the update and fixing the border between the mail and the lists. Are you going to release a single line version (as you did with v0.0.3)?
Great work! I love it.
One thing from me: I would like to use it with one row for sender/time/… . Is there a way to disable the second line there? I placed all things to use only one line but the second line is blank …
Keep on going!
Hmm, I can’t get it to ’stick’. When I enable the ‘Widemail’ column, then quit mail, next time I launch it the ‘Widemail’ column is hidden again.
You are the best!
I agree with the above: if you can remove the blank line for those not using the new column, I could finally upgrade from version 0.03
Absolutely Wonderful! Thanks for your hard work…
I agree with the others – this is a great plugin and this version is awesome.
However, I’m not too fond of the new WideMail plugin. It kinda “disrupts my workspace harmony” if you know what I mean
So I disabled it, and would prefer using my good old format: [From] [Subject] [Date] [Attachments] – in ONE line, but WideMail always adds a second blank line.
Please make it so that if we don’t use the WideMail Column, that we will at least not get the 2nd blank line. Thanks alot.
Quick feature request:
Is there a way to make color labels’ corners less rounded? They look ridiculous with the two-line preview.
Thanks!
I hope that eventually you’ll add a preferences pane to the mail preferences to allow some tweaking of the list format e.g. 2nd line indentation, attribute separators and order, other attributes, font selection and colors etc.
$ent my appreciation in yesterday.
THANKS!
I like the consolidated view also, but is there a way to do sorting. The only way I found is to unhide the date column, sort, re-hide.
You did a very good job; written in Objective-C, WideMail is very light and fast and its features are very useful.
Perhaps a little bug: in a thread unread messages have a blue bubble too big; there was the same bug in the Widescreen plugin and you corrected it.
Awesome work!
One small bug – in the Widescreen column selected email subjects invert to white but not the sender name, so they become very difficult to read. Both should switch to white if the item is selected.
Great Job!
I would like to have the color issue fixed asap, though. I use SpamSieve and it colors emails according to their spam level. Widemail 0.1.0 doesn’t allow the color so I’m back to sorting through all the spam. For me, this would be an immediate need.
-Thanks for all your work!
Yay for the new release. I really like the custom column.
I’m seeing a redraw bug though when I use it, and have email being labeled by color. The associated color appears as a lozenge shaped blob on the right of the column – and selecting an email in the list causes the color blobs listed below to have a vertical white bar appear in the middle of them.
First off, thanks for some great work — this is a great Mail.app mod.
Next, I 2nd the concern of the first poster regarding the issue with highlighting. Would be great to get that one fixed.
Finally a few suggestions I think might help readability…
- I love that the Sender/Date (second) line is a lighter color to distinguish it from the Subject (first) line; I’d suggest making it a little lighter than it is to make it even easier to differentiate from the Subject.
- The date would be easier to read and more concise in the format “Nov 7 @ 12:45″ (while it contains less info, the added info is not generally needed and is still available by showing the “Date Received/Sent” column – I think readability & brevity is more important given the amount of info on the second line)
One last comment — you may want to check out the functionality when the “Message List Font” is something other than Lucidia Grande. I used to use Optima, but it causes display problems (text clipping) when used with WideMail.
Great work – looking forward to continued refinements.
I second the preference pane.
I think there is a bug. The first time I installed it it seemed to work but then when I closed mail, mail crashed. Now whenever I open mail I have to re-enable the widemail column because it always hide itself when mail is closed.
Hi, very good work. Thank you for that. But on my german system the “Subject (Betreff)” couldn’t be hidden when I use the WideMailColumn-View. So I have it twice.
I agree with the first comment by Patrick – it would be nice if the background of messages colored through the WideMail column without having to add unnecessary columns to either side of it. Other than that, great release!
Amazing work! Love the wide-mail column with the two row info display. Mac Mail is worthless without this plugin!!
@a.gold: Right-click (ctrl-click) on the column header, and you’ll see a “Sort By” sub-menu…
Great work – I love it! One suggestion: would it be possible to have the second row of text to be shown in white when the message is selected? Dark grey on bark blue is very difficult to read!
I agree with others, when the “Widemail” column is disabled i don’t want a two-line view- especially since there’s nothing in it.
Dane,
Thanks! I was lost when Leopard broke Letterbox
.
I like WideMail version 0.1.0 as is, but initially agree with SkyDiverX where he/she asked above, “…is it possible to place the sender of the email on top of the subject?” Again, if not, I’m happy with it as is
. Thanks and Good Job!
with the WideMail column, the sender/time font does not change to white like it should when you select a message to read. It is almost impossible to see in the dark blue highlight that Mail puts on it. Also, the light blue highlight for related messages in a thread is all screwed up.
I like this plugin but I agree with the most of the others: please make it possible to have a single line view. There’s another problem to me. I’m using a special international date and time format (Mo 12.11. | 12:00) showing it up in my menu bar (like this one) and now the date and time in the WideMail Column is shown in this format: 12.11.2007 Mo 12.11. | 12:00
Maybe there will be a better way to get the date and time.
As s.hum said the best way should be a preference pane for this plugin.
Also I share a.gold’s position that sorting is complicated. Maybe there will be a context menu by right-click to WideMail Column to select a sorting.
Has anyone else had this problem:
http://web.mit.edu/larryv/Public/wide_mail.png
Under threaded mode, the “Started by on ” line no longer has the date. I doubt this has to do with WideMail, but I want to be sure before I go asking elsewhere. (Removing WideMail did not solve the problem.)
Anybody know how to get the single “subject” column back. After uninstalling widemail it does not appear when I control click the columns! It does show up in sorting though?
We do need the option for SINGLE line!
Also, the Message window column does NOT keep its size after I re-open Mail. Its a little difficult to resize they way I would like the view.
Great work!
Great!
But please remove the 2-line when the WideMail Column is de-selected. It adds a space-wasting empty line for no reason.
Otherwise the best plugin for Leopard.
The double height row will be disabled when the WideMail column is not displayed in the next release.
So much better, thank you for that WideMail column (was that in response to my email about column alignment? Good to know the bug reports are being heard!)
Two bugs:
1. If I am viewing an HTML email that’s too wide to fit in the view pane, and I try to slightly resize the viewpane bigger / mailbox pane smaller, the divider jumps to the full width of the HTML email. I then can’t make it any smaller.
If I switch to a plaintext message, and make the whole window narrower, then I can fine-adjust the divider between the panes again.
2. The date in the WideMail column is great to have, but my eyes still like to scan down the right in a separate column. Using the built-in date column doesn’t wrap properly.
Could you make 3 columns available:
- WideMail Sender/Subject/Date,

The objective being that I can still have your gorgeous new 2-line sender/subject column, and if I want a separate, nice-wrapping 2-line date column on the right, separately resizable, etc., I can have that too!
What a fantastic app. I’d happily pay $20 for this and recommend it to all my friends on Macs, as soon as it’s at a 1st non-beta release! Keep up the excellent work, with all my encouragement.

Thanks for putting in a one-line option Dane. Looking forward to the next release. And great job on slimming the plugin. From 7 MB down to 700 KB and change… great job. Noticeably zippier and much more responsive
Thanks again for taking the time to do this
+1 for making sender the highlighted feature of the message info in Widemail column. Most people use ridiculous subjects, so they’re no help to me. The sender, on the other hand, is what I’m looking for.
If that happens, I’ll donate! ; )
I want to remember all of you: There is a Paypal Button
Dane will be happy.
@block: I’m having the same problem! After uninstalling WideMail, I cannot get a Subject-column back. This is rather annoying
Love your work but I have a problem. I uninstalled it and lot my “Subject” header in inbox. Subject is there for some folders but not for inbox. Can someone help… it’d crazy not being able to read the subject of an email
Tim
PS: Of course I have tried to enable all columns in the View menu but Subject isn’t listed…
Next release it is then. Keep up the good work.
BIG BUG!
After deinstalling the WideMail plugin the “Subject” column is gone! And I mean gone! It isn’t even available in the list of available columns!!!! Please help!
The feature of being able to hide the subject column is not provided by default in Mail. I have added that ability in my plugin for ease of use of the WideMail Column.
If you hide the subject column and then uninstall the plugin you will no longer be able to get the subject column back without reinstalling the plugin, enabling the column then uninstalling the plugin.
I repeat: the ability to hide the subject column is added by my plugin this is not a feature of mail.
Great great plugin!love it, just wanted to 2nd the request for sender first line, subject second line feature
also color tags working properly.
Can’t wait for an update. Thanks loads
Everyone,
A great way to show thanks and support to Dane is by donating.
I see a lot of requests and suggestions coming in, I only hope that you all donate as much
as you request.
I know I did!
Thanks again, Dane!

Is there a way to have the widemail view set the same for all mailbox/smart mailboxes. I keep having to reset my columns to make it look appropriate.
Keep up the good work
Dane –
Many thanks for working on this and being so great at communicating with all of us. I’m wondering if you have any thoughts on features that you will be including in upcoming versions?
Personally, I’d love to see the ability to set preferences so that people can customize things to their personal liking. For me, I’d love to see the name of the sender on top and the subject in grey @ 40%.
Also, I strongly encourage people to send in a donation.
Again, many thanks –
Matt

Ive got 5 secs to check your site out. I learn there is something called “widemail”. What does it purport to accomplish ? How does it address a shortcoming with Apple Mail ? Where is the sense of “before” and “after” ?
Could not easily ascertain these things. Do I need your plugin ? If so, why ? What problem(s) will it solve ? These should all be learned / presented at the top of your site, please.
fyi from a fellow Mac enthusiast
Hello,
I just installed WideMail, and cannot seem to locate WideMail Preferences. Can you tell me were this folder is located. Great app, by the way!
Thank you,
