The new version of WideMail, version 0.1.1 has now been released.
Changes:
- Added: Two-line interface is only displayed when the “WideMail Column” is displayed, WideMail uses the standard One-line interface if “WideMail Column” is hidden.

Wahoo! Thanks – just sent some “appreciation funds”
Same here! Please all, donate!
As stated before your product is great. However with ver 0.1.1 the row hight is not correct text is on top of each other when using the WideMail and removing the subject.
And yes I did donate 10.00 last week
@Bob B: Can you please send me an email with a screenshot attached regarding the problem you are having?
Thanks
Dane
Hi Dane,
I just contributed $5.00 on Monday and here you are posting an even better version of the software. Keep up the great work and please put me on your mailing list if you have one. I don’t want to miss the excellent upgrades you continue to make to WideMail.
Sicerely,
Alex
Dear friend,
is it possible to remove the alternating colors in the second column, when using your fine plugin?

Perry
I was gonna donate … honest!
(Have done now anyway.)
I was gonna donate, I just forgot … honest!
Wow! I love the new Sender/Subject info! I’ve just managed to get rid of the default subject and now have Mail looking fantastic! Many thanks indeed! Funds donated!
Dane -
Is it possible to use relative dates in the WideMail column and separate the sender from the date in a way where all dates are in a line like a column? In the current version the dates move left to right depending on the size of the sender address but it makes it harder to scan down my emails for the date. Otherwise great implementation!
I just installed it (v0.1.1). Sweet! With my widescreen 17″ MBP, this looks and works great! I just donated $5 in appreciation for your work.
One suggestion: can you make the Subject line of the 2-line Sender/Subject larger or bolder or otherwise more clearly differentiated from the Sender and Date/Time line below it? As my eye scans the middle column, I want to see the Subject lines clearly and have the secondary indented Sender/Date info be more “transparent” or “diminished”.
Great. Thats the way, i like it…. ah ah!
I prefer version 0.1 because the front height was bigger than in 0.1.1. Guess the space between the rows is too small now. How can I find a way to delete the subjects column then I could use the widemail column. When I use both I have a mix of columns: two rows in widemail and one row for the others… .
Going to donate when this issue is fixed.
Best wishes, Raymond.
at first i could not check or uncheck the default subject column as it wasn’t there as a choice. after a few quits, the subject showed up in the contextual menu and then i had to check it before i could uncheck it.
that make sense ?
it showed it was unchecked at first load and ‘checking’ it made it disappear. kind of backwards at first use.
just nitpicking really
this is THE stuff
but it acts kinda weird – i got a couple of rules set to change background color – using widemail column the color is limited to “original” mail app fields
Aghh, still got a problem with the Widemail column not ’sticking’ when I change views or quit Mail. It always disappears and shrinks right down when I switch folders.
Am I the only one?
Hi, I am very happy that I found this plug in, which is really great. There is only one problem with the new sender/ subject column. I use another plug in called mailtypeselect frequently to quickly jump to emails of a certain sender. This now doesn’t work any more … too bad.
OK. I donate. Thanks Dane for support.
Raymond.
Hi Dane, Is there any way we could get the option of switching the Subject and Senders so that the Sender is on top and the Subject is at the bottom. That would mimic the iPhone display of emails.
I tend to use labels to organize my inbox. However, with the new WideMail column, the labels do not work properly after removing the “Date Received” column.
See, if you have labels setup through Rules, then the background of the message subject in your inbox will appear the set color. However, I believe it relies on the “Date Received” column for the labels to appear properly. After removing that column, the labels are off-center, and do not view correctly.
Otherwise, I’m liking what I’m seeing so far.
I second Ayman’s comment. I would love to have the option to switch the subject and sender on the Widemail Column. Perhaps have two columns to choose from and name one “Sender/Subject” and the other “Subject/Sender”. That way, everyone case choose whether they want the sender (and date/time info) or the subject on top.
Great plugin. Cash on the way.
Possible bug with 0.1 (please reproduce if you can)
1. Enter a search term in the search field that returns some mail messages (On My Mac)
2. Select a mail message.
3. Select some text in the mail message body.
4. Right-click it and choose “New ToDo”.
Result: I get a spinning beachball of death.
Anyone else?
Hi Dane, great work, cool tool. 10 USD for you via paypal from me
I love this plugin! There is one thing that I’d like to see, however. When using Threaded mode and when using the “WideMail Column” view, I’d love to see the threads indented compared to the header email. Standard Mail does this, but the WideMail Column view shows all the emails at the same position on the left.
Thanks!
I had an issue with widemail causing Apple Mail to continually crash. I am not sure that it is completely widemail’s fault or if it conflicted with spamsieve. Anyone else having crashing issues?
Ok I just updated to 10.5.1 and widemail fonts and all looks great.
Now if I change to another folder the Widemail (subject/sender) is gone for good.
But I still love the plugin
The one thing that keeps me from keeping the plugin installed is the visual changes within the windows. I like the size of the text in the lists and the size of the icons. What I really want is for everything to be exactly the same, except for the placement of the panes. When the other elements are changed, it makes Mail look very un-Mac-like and not very good looking.
You made my day … thanks!
This is great!
One thing, though: I mix my outgoing and incoming mail in the same set of mailboxes (it helps me keep track of conversations much more effectively).
Would it be possible for the Widemail Column to show *either* the sender OR the recipient, whichever is appropriate on a per-email basis?
In other words, if I’ve sent the email it should show the recipient (perhaps with a “To:” in front) and if it’s an incoming email it should show the sender (perhaps with a “From:” in front). This would ideally work regardless of whether the email is technically located in the sent folder or elsewhere.
@Dan:
This is a good idea, i will look into it further, probably wont be in the next release but maybe in the future.
I chose to uninstall it after a while because I couldn’t read the entire subject lines of RSS titles, but that’s a personal issue. However there is a bug:
When you uninstall the mod without first reselecting “Subject” as a column, it seems to disappear after you uninstall it. I had to reinstall, reselect the default subject column and then uninstall again to fix this.
Cool idea, though.

Is there an archive of older versions of widemail? My mom is still on 10.4 and won’t be upgrading anytime soon.
Thanks for this new version Dane, I’m using it at home.
How bout a button/menu item/prefs item to switch between stock and wide mail. If/when you accomplish that I’ll be donating.
Just installed 0.1.1 on my Leopard 10.5.1. Looks nice until i try to resize the window. Then, the Mail application turns completely white. Restart is the only way out.
This problem remains even after uninstalling WideMail…
@Flameboy: This issue is caused by an incompatibility with Letterbox check your bundles folder for Letterbox and remove it.
Installed 0.1.1 on Mac OS X 10.5. Looks pretty good, except for one strange bug. I use threaded view in Mail, sorted by date from oldest to newest. When I expand threads in my Inbox and then collapse them, the list snaps back up to oldest message, instead of keeping the thread in view. This only happens in my Inbox, not in any of my other mailboxes.
Great Plugin.
However, I don’t understand why every time I fire up mail, I have to re-click the WideMail Column I’ve set up in order to sort by latest received. It should simply display this once I have selected it the first time. Like many people, I like to see my latest mail at the top or bottom of the column (similar to Outlook or Entourage).
Anyhow, fine job otherwise.
I love the plugin!
But having issues with sorting my mail by Date Received when using it.
I would also appreciate having more tokens available for placement in the second row.
Dane: Thanks, that solved my problem!
